NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. ON TARGET INVESTIGATION & CONSULTING, LLC would like to highlight this effort. The health and welfare of our children is a critical concern for the future of our society. Our children are one of our greatest treasures.

I vividly recall, as a Police Sergeant in 1995, responding to a call in an apartment complex for an “unconscious baby.” After arriving, I did CPR on the 9-month-old baby boy. His mother’s live-in boyfriend, who was present and made the 911 call, provided an explanation that he had tripped and fallen on top of the child. Having my own 9-month-old daughter at home at the time, I immediately recognized his explanation as “bullshit.”

The child was transported to the local hospital by ambulance and then flown to Hershey Medical Center for critical care treatment. Unfortunately, the child died within hours.

A thorough investigation of the incident was immediately initiated by our police department. The medical examiner determined the child had died of “Shaken Baby Syndrome.” In his later testimony during trial, he also testified that the injuries were consistent with someone holding the child by the ankles and slamming the child across a surface.

The boyfriend was convicted of killing the child and sentenced to state prison.
